The Fireweed Project is a community-led program of research that builds on existing community knowledge and strengths to advance knowledge of, and remove barriers to, reproductive health services for Indigenous people in Canada. Phase two of the program is the From Research to Action Project, a five-year national study funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) that builds on earlier research findings of the Fireweed Project and is co-led by Seventh Generation Midwives Toronto/ Call Auntie Clinic and ekw’í7tl doula collective. The project brings together a national team to co-develop community-led supports, apply an Indigenous-led evaluation, and advance cultural safety in service delivery.
Dr. Monchalin is seeking a full-time Research Coordinator III. The Research Coordinator III will conduct and lead the execution of project design and the day-to-day management of research activities and implementation of projects involving quantitative and qualitative methodologies, including the building of study infrastructure and the development of future projects. This individual supports communications and operations of the program, and supports the team in the collection of study data including recruitment, consent, conduct of interviews, and administration of study tools and data. The Research Coordinator III has high level administrative oversight ensuring proper maintenance of study records, quality assurance, and integrity of study data, and monitors financial processes including payments, invoicing, and processing of honoraria. The Research Coordinator III is responsible for liaising with community partners, coordinating the project steering committee, and providing day-to-day guidance to junior staff and trainees.

Primary focus of this role
This is a full-time position. Approximately 80% of the role is dedicated to the From Research to Action project, including day-to-day project management, data collection, evaluation support, partner relationships, and coordination of the national team. The remaining 20% supports the broader research program on Indigenous reproductive health service access, including the development of new projects, proposals, and grant applications.
Duties/Responsibilities
Due to variable nature of position, this list is to be used as a guide only. Includes all duties assigned to Coordinator I and II, in addition to increasing managerial responsibility as experience develops.
Research Duties (65%)
Initiates and develops proposals, grant application processes and protocols. Develops and reviews content.
Assists the Principal Investigator in the initiation of new research, including drafting initial research protocols and identifying strategic opportunities.
Ongoing coordination of study activities; day to day project management of timelines, resources, deliverables, and study tasks.
Quantitative and qualitative data collection, including designing interview guides, surveys, selecting/screening samples, cleaning and coding data, and conducting interviews.
Supports the design and delivery of an Indigenous-led evaluation in collaboration with community partners.
Chairs research group meetings and coordinates the project steering committee and Advisory Circle.
Monitors and controls research regulations, quality, and guidelines, including ethical (e.g. REB submissions) and safety protocols. Ensures proper forms/applications are complete and adhered to.
Provides logistical support in collaboration with funding partners, confirms and maintains budgets, and liaises between funder and research finance.
Builds and maintains respectful, reciprocal relationships with Indigenous community partners and national organizations, including leading the coordination of in-person activities
Prepares and presents research at conferences and other meetings, and supports community partners in co-presenting or leading presentations.
Day to Day Project and Staff Guidance Tasks (25%)
May oversee staff including approving vacations, time off, conflict resolution and problem solving between staff and stakeholders, leads performance approval plans for their project, and sets targets/goals/strategic plans.
Provides training, mentorship, and day to day guidance of Research Assistants, hotline navigators, students, and trainees.
Supports the recruitment and onboarding of program staff, trainees, and hotline navigators.
Administrative Duties (10%)
Ensures maintenance, collection, transcription, and entry of study related data, in accordance with hospital and privacy regulations and Indigenous data governance protocols.
Responsible for ensuring honoraria are paid out accurately, on time, and in accordance with UHT policies and procedures.
Develops written reports and financial reports for funders.
Support maintenance of program website and community communications
Performs Cross Functional and Other Duties as Assigned and/or Requested.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills
Masters Degree in public health, Indigenous health, health services research, community health, or another related health or social science discipline, and more than 3 years of relevant experience, OR demonstrable equivalent combination of specialized education and experience.
TCPS CORE 2. (Completed within first 2 weeks of hire)
Experience working respectfully and effectively with Indigenous communities and organizations, grounded in an understanding of cultural safety, self-determination, OCAP® principles, and community-led research.
Experience coordinating or managing research projects, community-based initiatives, or comparable multi-partner programs.
Experience confirming and maintaining project budgets, and administering honoraria or participant payments.
Excellent computer skills with Microsoft Office experience (Word, Powerpoint, and particularly Excel), and database software.
Knowledge of survey software (Survey Monkey, Qualtrics, REDCap, Nvivo).
Qualitative analysis software (e.g. NVIVO) is an asset.
